20 Cool & Effective Kitchen Hacks

Anything that makes life easier and/or saves money is good, right? I scour the internet looking for ways to do both. Some I’ve tried and some I haven’t. I don’t own a waffle iron so I couldn’t try out the hacks using one but these all seem to fit the bill for cool & effective kitchen hacks!

1. Keep a couple of marshmallows in your bag of brown sugar to keep it soft.
2. Core strawberries with a straw. Just push a straw (not a paper one) through the bottom of the strawberry until it pops out of the top. You’ll remove the entire core.
3. Spray measuring cups and spoons with a little non-stick cooking spray before measuring sticky ingredients like honey. You’ll get the full measured amount out of the cup without scraping and it will be easier to clean!
4. The lids from deli containers make a great apparatus for cutting things like cherry tomatoes evenly. Just put the item you want to slice between two lids and gently press down. Slice through using the lids as a guide for your knife. You can place as many tomatoes as you can fit in the lids to slice them all at once.
5. If you need to spread butter and the stick is too cold to do that just use a grater to grate it. You’ll have spreadable butter in a jiffy.
6. Keep tomatoes from rotting quickly by keeping them out of the refrigerator and storing them stem side down. This keeps air from entering the stem and moisture from escaping through the stem.
7. An apple slicer is a great way to cut potatoes in a hurry. Just cut the potato in half and then use the apple slicer to quickly cut them into “sticks.”
8. Put water and lemon slices in a muffin tin to make flavored ice cubes for pitchers or punch bowls.
9. Speaking of lemons, you can both keep fish from sticking to the grill and infuse it with flavor by placing the fish on a bed of lemons on the grill.
10. Want to impress guests with perfectly clear ice cubes for their drinks? Use filtered water and boil it. Allow it to cool then boil it again. Let the water cool again and then freeze as usual. This process removes the air and dissolves the minerals that make your ice cubes cloudy.
11. Use your waffle iron to make perfect hash browns. Just place the hash browns in a thin layer in the iron and cook until golden brown and crispy.
12. Use the waffle iron to make cinnamon bun waffles. Spray the waffle iron with cooking spray and heat. Using cinnamon buns from a package of refrigerated buns (like Pillsbury Grands cinnamon rolls) place one bun in the center of the preheated waffle iron. Close and bake for 3 – 4 minutes until bun is cooked through.
13. Keep lunchbox contents cold using sponges. Wet new kitchen sponges and freeze. Put a frozen sponge in a zipper bag and place in the lunchbox. The frozen sponge will keep the contents really nice and cold until lunchtime! So much cheaper than those ice packs.
14. Put plastic wrap in the refrigerator to make it easier to handle. You won’t get frustrated or waste plastic wrap by tearing it to pieces.
15. Use a spoon to peel ginger instead of a peeler. It will make getting into the little nooks and crannies more easily.
16. If you like to melt the cheese on your tacos in the oven place your tacos on a baking sheet, ball up aluminum foil and place between taco shells to keep the tacos from falling over.
17. If you have more fresh herbs than you can use try freezing the extras. Put oil or water in an ice cube tray, chop the herbs, and add them to the liquid. When you need the herbs just pop out a cube and thaw!
18. Partially frozen meat is easier to slice than thawed. If you’re making a dish that calls for thinly sliced meat cut it while it’s still partially frozen (or freeze it until it’s no longer soft).
19. Keep bugs out of your drinks outdoors by using a coffee filter or cupcake liner inverted over the glass. Cut a hole just big enough for a straw and sip your fully-protected bug free beverage!
20. If you’ve ever had trouble peeling a banana try doing it from the bottom. Simply squeeze the bottom of the banana gently then peel from that end.
