Cheeseburger Stuffed French Bread

There are quite a few versions of stuffed French bread floating around the internet and it looked pretty good.  I had planned to make it some time ago but it just kind of slipped through the cracks of my recipe file. I used a lot of cheese so I dubbed my version Cheeseburger Stuffed French Bread. I like that it’s inexpensive and you can sneak whatever vegetables you want into the recipe. Plus you can double the recipe for a family to make dinner + a freezer meal!

A handful of ingredients makes a satisfying dinner.

Scoop a trough into each side of the bread. Tear the bread you remove into small pieces.

bread-cheese-mixed

Mix the bread pieces with the cheese and set aside.

Brown the ground beef until it’s no longer pink. You want it chopped up as though you are making Sloppy Joe’s.

Cheeseburger Stuffed French Bread

Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf French bread
  • 2 cups shredded cheese of your choice
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced small
  • 1/2 cup celery, diced small
  • 1/2 can (8 oz.) sliced mushrooms (or use fresh)
  • 1 small jalapeño, diced very small
  • 1 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5oz.) cream of mushroom soup
  • 2 1/2 – 3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 – 3 tablespoons milk

Directions:

  1. Slice the French bread lengthwise being careful not to cut all the way through.
  2. Scoop out some of the bread from each side of the loaf and reserve.
  3. Tear the bread into very small pieces and mix with the cheese in a large bowl.
  4. Brown the ground beef until no longer pink. Drain and set aside.
  5. To the same skillet used to brown the beef add the celery, onions, jalapeño, and mushrooms (you can add other vegetables for any combination you desire).
  6. Cook the vegetables until tender crisp (3 – 4 minutes)
  7. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
  8. Add the hamburger, soup, Worcestershire sauce, and milk to the vegetables and stir until combined.
  9. Add the bread/cheese mixture and stir well. You want to make sure the bread is well coated with the soup mixture.
  10. Spoon the cheeseburger mixture into the bottom of the French bread and cover with the top of the bread.
  11. Bake for 12 – 15 minutes at 350F.

BONUS!

and-a-freezer-meal

* One loaf of French bread gives us dinner and a freezer meal. I wrap the Cheeseburger Stuffed French Bread in plastic wrap then foil to freeze. To serve I thaw overnight and then heat, covered, at 350F for 15 minutes. If the bread isn’t crispy enough I uncover it and heat it for another 5 minutes.
