For the couple of days the weather has been so much milder that I am getting excited about spring! I’ve been walking around singing a song in my head. Well, my version of a song anyway. The melody is Georgia on my Mind but the title of my song is Gardening on my Mind!
Deep in the bone-chilling cold weather I decided I was too old and too crippled to keep up my vegetable garden any longer. When I looked out the window at the garden I caught myself sighing tiredly. It was time to surrender. I was going to ask Mr. C and Pete to yank the fence out and seed the area with grass seed.
The slight change in the weather has gardening on my mind.
It’s been warmer (although we had warmer days in February) and we’re getting a lot of spring rain. Things are turning very green. I’ve seen ducks and geese flying overhead on their way to their home ponds. We’ve even got a bunch of robins in the yard! All these signs of spring made me start to have gardening on my mind.
And what’s the start of garden season without the joy of shopping for new tools, seeds, and plants? I admit I didn’t start seeds this year. It was part of my now disappearing desire to plow the garden under. But since I’m starting to itch to grow our own vegetables I need to really get going with my plans for this year!
You’re never too old to learn!
I’ve become really interested in vertical gardening so Vertical Gardening: Grow Up, Not Out, for More Vegetables and Flowers in Much Less Space is high on my list of “must have” books! I know someone who is producing more vegetables than I am and he has a tiny, urban backyard! He grows everything vertically. I have gardening on my mind but in a skyscraper sort of way!
A gardener’s work is never done!
Since overhead watering is a terrible thing for most vegetable plants I really want to set up a soaker system. The Garden Row Drip Irrigation Snip-n-Drip Soaker System should be perfect!
I need to move both my strawberries and peppermint plants. They’re going to take over the entire garden! But digging is really rough on my hands and wrists so this Radius Garden 101 Ergonomic Aluminum Hand Transplanter should make it easier. I may just get the 5-Piece Blue Ergonomic Hand Tool Set. It includes a trowel, transplanter, weeder, cultivator, and scooper. And the ergonomic handles will save me a lot of strain and pain!
Everyone needs a hobby!
Since I don’t want to leave Mr. Comfortable without things to do I want to get The Vegetable Gardener’s Book of Building Projects: 39 Indispensable Projects to Increase the Bounty and Beauty of Your Garden. Because after he finishes the duck cabin what will he do all summer?
Working in the garden can be really tough on the knees. And it you garden like me it can be rough on the fanny, too! I used to have an old bed pillow to sit on but you can imagine how nasty that got almost immediately! This year I think I’ll get a Foam Comfort Cushion that I can kneel or sit on!
And for my sons who both are excellent cooks I want to get this culinary herb garden in a can! Broadleaf Sage, Genovese Basil, Cilantro (Leisure Coriander), Single-leaf Parsley, Common Thyme, Dill, Oregano, and Onion Chives! I love this collection because it’s all non-GMO and 100% heirloom seeds!
The warmer weather has definitely got me revved up to get outside and, once again, I have gardening on my mind!
