When It's Too Hot to Do Anything, Do These Things

Remember that Twilight Zone episode where the earth was supposed to have moved too close to the sun and everything and everyone was going to burn up? Yeah. That’s this summer. Where I live in Michigan we’re on track to beat the record for number of days over 90° by the end of the week. And, since humidity is always a huge factor here, it’s been difficult to do outdoor things. Other parts of the country have had it much worse!  So what can you do when it’s too hot to do anything? Do these things!

  1. Visit the library. On a hot day you can spend a couple of hours (or more) catching up on your summer reading in the comfort of an air conditioned library. Take your time deciding which books you want to check out. Read a few of the magazines or check out their DVDs for loan.

  1. Try new summer recipes. If you’ve always wanted to try making your own sorbet or ice cream a hot summer day spent indoors may be the time. You can make a form of watermelon sorbet by simply blending some seedless watermelon (or remove the seeds) in a blender then freezing it until it’s the perfect consistency for a summer treat.

  1. Go to the movies. There may not be anything you’ve been dying to see but sitting in a cool, dark theatre munching snacks is better than sitting in your yard slowly melting. And if there’s a movie you really wanted to see think about seeing it twice!

  1. Go ice skating! Many cities have indoor ice skating rinks that are open year round. What could be better than having to get hot chocolate to warm up when it’s over 100° outside?

  1. Have a water balloon party. If your friends are up for getting wet and cooling off ask them over for a water balloon fight. Fill the balloons with really cold water and let your inner child loose. After the water balloon fight you can all have a cold beer and maybe throw some burgers on the grill. Better yet, order a pizza and don’t cook at all.

  1. Play in the sprinkler. Or if you’re too old or too lazy to actually jump back and forth like the kids just set up a lawn chair and anticipate the shower of icy water that’s going to hit you any second.

  1. Go to a beach. Whether it’s the ocean or a lake you can do the usual summertime beach thing. But, on those really scorching days, go in the water to your neck and refuse to move until it cools off. This year that may be around Thanksgiving.

  1. Enjoy the darkness. During the day it’s too hot to walk the dog, mow the lawn, or garden. So why not start doing those things after the sun is setting? Get up extra early and enjoy the day before the sun really rises. Wait until the sun has sunk behind the trees to mow the lawn. Or just take a walk through your neighborhood in the dusk. It’s a very different place without the sun glaring down.

  1. Take a cool shower and a nap. Hey, if you can’t be productive you may as well enjoy it! Cool off with a shower and throw yourself in front of a fan to take a nap. Then later, when you can’t sleep it will be dark and cooler outside!

  1. Don’t forget your dog feels the heat too. Try making him a frozen treat to enjoy in the evening. Freeze canned pumpkin, yogurt, or just plain water and let him feast on his frozen treat. While you’re at it you can make your own popsicles to enjoy with him.

Great ideas!!! Thanks for the late night working idea, I positively feel like a slug during these high humidity days! Iced coffee and I think I’ll take the dogs into the water as well!! Think private island, right? =]

A friend has everyone over with their dogs several times a week. She has a built in pool the dogs can also swim in which would be great but our two doofus dogs won’t go in it! Argh!

    I love number 6!
This past weekend we went by a park at 10:30 at night, and I was surprised by the number of people walking the track, even families with kids. Then I noticed everyone had their phones out, and realized they must be playing Pokemon Go! At least they were outside!

I don’t really understand the game at all. It’s supposed to get people out and moving and yet my son’s girlfriend “found” one of those things on my service dog’s paw…while she was sitting on the couch.
